Discussion:
webhosts (a little OT)

I know some folks on this list have used DreamHost, so I hope no one
minds that this isn't at all Ruby related...

My mother is a children's author and has a static content website. Her
current host, OLM, has been fine until this year. Then this year,
OLM's mail servers started getting blackholed by some of the black
lists.

And as if the mail situation wasn't bad enough, then OLM added a spam
filter for incoming mail that as far as I can tell, just blocks every
other incoming email. It's gotten to the point where she's missing
invitations to speak.

I was thinking I might transition her to DreamHost, but before I did
it, I wanted to check to see if anyone has had any problems with
DreamHost email? She doesn't need PHP, Ruby on Rails, or a database,
just static hosting and reliable email. Is DreamHost a good bet? Or
does anyone else have a better static host to recommend?

Also, do they have decent support? Phone based?

Might be best to reply to me personal, unless others on list are
interested in hearing the responses.

I use dreamhost to handle all of mfdz.com's incoming mail. it just
hits the dreamhost servers and is forwarded to my gmail account, but
it rarely hiccups. as far as the hosting stuff goes, Dreamhost was
built for static stuff, it seems. my only troubles with it have been
using up too many cpu minutes, and getting shutdown for it.

that said, if you have access to the mx records, you might try setting
her up with gmail for her domain. probably more reliable than
dreamhost, even, and more fun. I don't know what to do about hosting
in that case, but my experience with gmail on grabb.it has been smooth
as one could hope.

good luck

ive been exceedingly happy with zoneedit.com, which does DNS hosting,
but also does MX handling/mail forwarding. its free for the first 5
zones and has a nice, simple web interface.

If you just need domain email, one idea is to get say GMail for domains, or
some similar thing like that...

I run the pdx.st mailing list off of DreamHost, and no complaints yet.
