brigadeers,

freegeek is celebrating mayday next tuesday,
so the building will be closed and empty,
making it difficult for the brigade to meet there :-/

is there an alternate meeting-y space,
or will a bar do?

oh,
and in general,
i'm the assigned contact person for the ruby brigade within freegeek,
so any space-related issues (usage on alternate nights, broken things,
&c.) can be brought to me,
or put to this list with a subject that catches my attention.

I think this is a fine excuse to do another informal meetup at the Lucky Lab
or someplace similar. Anyone else have suggestions?

Thanks Martin! We really appreciate everything FreeGeek has been able to
provide for us. It's without a doubt one of the best resource available in
Portland.

The Lab is nice, but gets old after a while, I'd be up for a change.

We had a meetup once at The New Old Lompoc which was kinda nice. I
haven't been to Bridgeport since they remodelled.

This month's informal meeting kept me from giving a presentation I've
been itching to do, so I guess I'd prefer to be some place where I could
show some code and stuff. I'll defer to everyone else, though :)

Maybe we could reserve the Lab's private meeting room for a presentation
space? What's your presentation on, 'cause now we have to weigh "Ben's
Slides" against the opportunity to try a different drinking venue. ;)

I think a reservation for that room requires moneys, but I'm not sure.

The presentation is on a library I wrote for writing interactive
command-line applications, though that's a poor descriptor of what it
actually is.

I'd interested in giving a talk on securing your rails app against
Cross Site Request Forgery (CSRF). If anyone is interested, I'll
throw together some slides and go after Ben.

+1 on giving presentations. I think the deal with the Lucky Lab is
that you just take over the "private" room if you have a large enough
group, though paying parties with reservations take precedence. But a
change of pace is venue is fine by mee, too.

And if we're stuck for a spot, I could get us a meeting room with a
big projection screen here at Con-way (NW Savier and 21st).
Personally, I like Free Geek a lot better after a day in the cube
farm, and Con-way's buildings are about as corporate as you can get.
It is a short walk to the Lompoc, at least.

I work at LAIKA, which is leasing LJC (a building on the con-way campus,
for everyone else`) so I'm all for that :) It would also get at least
two of my coworkers to join!

But yeah, Con-way is not an inspiring location for a geekfest :)

I misread this as "requires monkeys." Yes, monkeys indeed.

Why would they insist on monkeys? Do you suppose they would accept
llamas or emus as a substitute? I could help on that front.

On a more serious note, I looked it up and they want $100 to reserve the
room <http://www.luckylab.com/html/parties.html>. Ixnay atthay.

You know, if you look closely, that includes a private bartender and implies
a totally closed event. I suspect it might be possible to convince them to
let us use it if enough people are sure to show up and buy beer/food and we
don't need our own bartender.

I've been meaning to talk to them about a similar arrangement for another
event, but sadly my time is pretty tight between now and first tuesday.
Anyone else want to call them and do some negotiating?

Jax on SW 2nd by the Max line has a nice semi-private side room
with a presentation screen, wireless and good beer. The PLUG
Advanced Topics, POSSE and Copynight groups (and maybe more) all
meet there happily. There's no reservation fee that I know of, but
I think it does need to be booked in advance.

Jax sounds nice but probably needs to be booked quickly. I prefer not just
going to the bar. Even the smallest presentations can be really insightful
and stir-up good discussion. Beer + presentation is even better!
