Discussion:
Rspec talk at 3/6 meeting?

Hi all,

If folks are interested, I'd be willing to give a short talk on RSpec at the
3/6 pdx.rb meeting; put something tangible behind the blah blah hand waving
I did on Tuesday. I could also talk about how RSpec is being used in
Rubinius as an example of using RSpec for things that perhaps don't even run
Ruby.

If you have a particular question you'd like me to address, send it in a
reply and I'll do my best to cover it.

Cheers,
Brian

I would like to hear more about RSpec. The project I'm working on is
slowly transitioning from Test::Unit tests to RSpec tests.

+1

I'd love to hear this -- in particular the use with Rubinius. I've had to
miss the last handful of meetings, but something like this would make me
work a little harder to make it out. ;~)

Ok, great. Thanks for the interest everyone who responded. I've added an
event on the website. Feel free to continue posting questions about stuff
you'd like me to cover, or bring your questions to the meeting and we'll
find somebody to answer them. :)

Brian,
I'd be interested in hearing how Rubinius manages keeping up with the
RSpec trunk. Especially with the syntax changes for 0.9.0, and
whatnot, it has been some work to keep current, even for Grabb.it, and
you guys have been using RSpec longer.

Chris,

We're not following trunk at the moment; we're just using 0.7.5.x. In fact,
I've had very little chance to play with trunk. I'm guessing we'll just
modify the specs for any syntax changes. I'll look into this before next
meeting.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'd love to see the notes on this - I've been wanting to dig into
RSpec lately but haven't had any time. I'm in Eugene so I won't be
able to make the meeting - someone take good notes pretty please? 3/6
is my birthday, it'd be a nice gift :)

Didn't someone in PDX.rb use to do podcasts in the past? Perhaps I
could bring a video camera and film it... and put it online (if Brian
is cool with that).

I've sent out a few offers to pay for a video camera so more user groups can do something like the SD.rb Podcast, but no one has taken me up on it yet.

If someone with basic knowledge of audio & video is willing to be in charge, I'd be glad to donate funds to purchase a video camera, and provide distribution for the videos.

I'm sure FreeGeek would love to have a video camera
donated. And they, unlike us, actually have a useful place to keep one.
Plus other groups who have their meetings at FreeGeek, like the PHP
group, could use it. Ideally, you could even coordinate with Chris
Dawson (who donated/setup the audio podcasting box) to do video podcasts
using the same hardware. I know Chris subscribes to this list...

Does FreeGeek also have a secure storage area where something like a
DV camera could be locked up when a group wasn't specifically using
it? I'm not sure what improvements to security have been made around
there since the break-in last year, but I've never gotten the sense
that anyone was keeping all that close of track of gear (other than
the machines being recycled, of course) as it passed through the
building.

It just seems like a shiny new video camera might be awfully
small/valuable/resellable to keep track of in an environment as open
as FreeGeek. That being said, there could also be a lot of common good
to be had if such equipment were available. Perhaps it could be bolted
down securely to a rather large tripod, and weighted so that it was
difficult to just walk out with it? (All of which would also make for
nice stabilization in case the camera was bumped during a
presentation...)

Just my random $0.025 (inflation, and all that...)

FreeGeek is already setup for audio podcasting:

http://wiki.freegeek.org/index.php/Podcast_Production

All we have to do is turn on the Mic, but usually
we are too lazy or decide the talk isn't universally
compelling enough. However, maybe we should make a point
to do it on 3/6 (sounds easier than taking detailed
notes, anyway).
